Finding Refuge, Embracing Peace
I’ve wrestled with this for as long as I can remember—carrying the weight of others’ choices as if their outcomes were somehow my responsibility. For years, I disguised people-pleasing as simply “doing what felt right,” though it often left me depleted and running on empty. I’ve tried to manage the unmanageable, clinging to the illusion of control. And that’s not even counting the uncertainty the world tentatively packages as “comfort”—the constant drip of news, opinions, and political noise that promises awareness but quietly feeds anxiety.
The journey of becoming is often marked by these kinds of seasons—uncertainty, stretching moments, and a soul longing for something steady that endures. In the midst of change and unpredictability, our hearts ache for a place to land—a firm foundation where we can exhale and know we are safe. Isaiah 32 offers an encouraging glimpse into that deep, abiding peace God promises to those who trust Him through every phase of growth and change.
The prophet paints a vision of a world renewed by God’s justice and rightness—a world where peace is not fragile or fleeting but rooted deep and steady. Verses 16 to 20 tenderly assure us:
“Justice will prevail in the wilderness, and righteousness will prevail in the fertile field. Peace will be its fruit, and righteousness its crop; confidence and security will be its result. My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” (Isaiah 32:20, NIV)
This isn’t simply about visible safety or comfort. It’s an invitation into a spiritual reality where God’s holy and just presence makes a home even in the loneliest, most unexpected places. Where God dwells, peace naturally follows, along with a quiet confidence that endures beyond circumstances. This peace isn’t tied to what’s happening around us. It steadies the soul no matter the season of life—whether barren wilderness or fertile field.
Reaching this place of refuge takes time, patience, and spiritual discipline—but it is a promise. God assures us that when we trust Him, justice and rightness will settle in our lives, peace will blossom, and quiet confidence will endure. As Isaiah illustrates:
“Blessed are you who sow beside all waters, who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free.” (Isaiah 32:20, NIV)
Imagine someone planting their garden beside a flowing river, letting their animals roam freely without worry—free to wander, rest, and thrive. It’s a life unhindered, abundant, and marked by grace and freedom. It’s the fruit of a heart anchored in trust rather than turmoil.
However, a clear line is drawn between those who find refuge in God’s shelter and those who don’t. Those who rest in His promises carry calm assurance, their hearts settled in the quiet presence of God. They are not driven by fear or frantic effort, but by a quiet faith that God is steadily weaving all things for good (Romans 8:28). Those who turn away, however, find themselves tossed by anxiety and unrest, their minds racing, spirits growing weary, and fear filling the spaces where peace could have blossomed.
As we navigate daily frustrations—whether the stress of deadlines, the uncertainty of outcomes we cannot control, or the relentless hum of the world around us—these verses offer a practical invitation: pause, breathe, and intentionally find refuge in God. Begin with small, steady practices: reflection, journaling, noticing where God is present in your day, or simply taking a moment to exhale. Over time, these steps cultivate trust, anchor your soul, and invite His peace to flourish even in uncertainty.
Here, in this refuge, our spirits find their true home—safe, secure, and quietly confident in the faithful love of God. And as we walk forward, we are reminded: each intentional choice to trust, release, and surrender is sacred groundwork for the heart, body, and soul to heal, grow, and thrive.
